Project Description

Large public parks require accurate documentation to support future improvements, facility upgrades, infrastructure planning, and long-term maintenance. When a prominent 28-acre park in Nashville, Tennessee needed a comprehensive digital representation of its site and facilities, Tacit Studios partnered with Scan Skunks to provide a complete LiDAR scanning and reality capture solution.

The project involved capturing the entire park property, surrounding structures, and several key amenities within a single day of fieldwork. By leveraging advanced Nashville, TN Aerial LiDAR Mapping scanning technology, Scan Skunks delivered highly accurate existing conditions documentation that will support future planning efforts and provide a reliable foundation for design and logistics coordination.

Comprehensive Site Documentation Across 28 Acres

One of the primary objectives of the project was to create an accurate digital representation of the entire park property. Traditional surveying methods can be time-consuming when documenting large outdoor spaces, especially when multiple structures, terrain changes, and surrounding contextual elements must be captured.

Using high-density LiDAR scanning technology, Scan Skunks documented the full 28-acre site while simultaneously collecting data on adjacent buildings and surrounding context. This approach allowed the design team to gain a complete understanding of how the park interacts with neighboring properties and infrastructure.

Capturing the surrounding environment is often just as important as documenting the park itself. Future improvements frequently require coordination with nearby structures, utilities, access routes, parking areas, and public spaces. By incorporating these elements into the deliverables, Tacit Studios received a comprehensive dataset capable of supporting a wide range of planning and design activities.

Capturing Critical Park Structures

While the overall site represented a significant portion of the project scope, several individual facilities within the park required additional attention and a higher level of detail.

Scan Skunks documented a variety of important structures located throughout the property, including public restrooms, concession facilities, storage buildings, and batting cages. These structures serve critical operational functions within the park and are expected to play a major role in future renovation and improvement initiatives.

Accurate measurements of these facilities provide architects, engineers, planners, and stakeholders with the information needed to evaluate existing conditions and develop future design concepts. By utilizing Nashville LiDAR scanning, the project team was able to obtain precise dimensional data without the need for extensive manual measurement efforts.

The resulting dataset creates a permanent digital record of the park's facilities and existing conditions, helping reduce uncertainty during future design phases.

Multiple Levels of Development for Planning Efficiency

One of the unique aspects of this project was the requirement for varying Levels of Development (LOD) within the final Building Information Modeling deliverables.

The broader site context and surrounding buildings were modeled as LOD 100 contextual masses and extrusions. These simplified representations provide the design team with the necessary information for planning, visualization, and coordination while minimizing unnecessary modeling effort. Within the park itself, key facilities and structures were developed to a significantly higher level of detail. Restrooms, concession areas, storage buildings, batting cages, and other critical assets were modeled at an LOD 350 level.

This approach allowed Tacit Studios to focus detailed modeling resources on the areas most likely to be impacted by future renovations and operational changes while maintaining efficient workflows for the larger contextual environment.

The combination of LOD 100 and LOD 350 modeling creates an ideal balance between project efficiency and detailed documentation, ensuring stakeholders have access to the information they need without overcomplicating the model.

Supporting Logistics Planning and Future Improvements

Accurate existing conditions documentation plays a vital role in logistics planning and park improvement projects. Without reliable measurements, project teams often face challenges that can lead to design conflicts, construction delays, and budget overruns.

The LiDAR-derived model created by Scan Skunks provides a dependable digital foundation for future planning efforts. Architects and engineers can evaluate potential renovations, analyze site constraints, study circulation patterns, and coordinate improvements using real-world data. Because the model includes both the park facilities and surrounding context, stakeholders can better understand how proposed changes may impact neighboring structures, visitor movement, operational workflows, and future expansion opportunities.

This level of detail is especially valuable for public facilities where multiple stakeholders, contractors, and planning agencies often need access to consistent and reliable information.

High-Accuracy Contour Mapping and Terrain Data

In addition to documenting structures and facilities, Scan Skunks captured detailed terrain information across the 28-acre site.

The resulting 2D CAD drawings included contour mapping that accurately represents existing topography throughout the property. Terrain data is a critical component of many planning projects because grading, drainage, accessibility, and utility improvements all depend on a clear understanding of existing elevations.

Contour information allows designers to identify slopes, drainage paths, low-lying areas, and other site characteristics that may influence future development decisions.

By integrating terrain data with the building documentation, the project team received a complete representation of both the built and natural environments.

Delivering a Complete Reality Capture Solution

The final deliverables provided to Tacit Studios were designed to support both immediate planning efforts and future project phases.

Scan Skunks successfully delivered a comprehensive 3D LiDAR scan dataset, detailed 2D CAD drawings with contour information, a fully developed 3D Revit model, and an interactive virtual tour of the property.

Each deliverable serves a specific purpose within the planning process. The LiDAR scan provides a permanent record of existing conditions. The CAD drawings offer accessible documentation for engineering and design teams. The Revit model supports BIM workflows and future renovation planning. The virtual tour enables stakeholders to remotely explore the site and review existing conditions without requiring additional field visits.

Together, these deliverables create a powerful digital asset that will continue to provide value throughout future planning, design, and construction activities.

Why Parks Benefit from LiDAR Scanning

Public parks present unique challenges when documenting existing conditions. Large acreage, varying terrain, multiple structures, and ongoing public use can make traditional measurement methods difficult and time-consuming.

LiDAR scanning allows teams to rapidly capture millions of accurate measurements across large sites while minimizing disruptions to daily operations. The technology provides a level of accuracy and completeness that is difficult to achieve through conventional methods alone.

For municipalities, landscape architects, park planners, and design firms, reality capture technology offers a faster and more reliable path toward creating accurate as-built documentation. The result is improved planning, reduced risk, and more efficient project execution.

The Nashville park project completed by Scan Skunks demonstrates how modern LiDAR technology can transform large-scale site documentation into actionable information that supports future improvements, logistics planning, and facility upgrades for years to come.
