Project Description

The National Mall, Reflecting Pool, and Lincoln Memorial are among the most recognizable public spaces in the United States. Every improvement, temporary exhibit, or installation within this historic landscape demands careful planning and highly accurate documentation. When designers required precise dimensional information for a temporary installation, Scan Skunks was selected to perform a comprehensive LiDAR scan and Matterport virtual tour of the exterior site.

Using advanced terrestrial LiDAR technology in Washington DC, our team captured the complex geometry of the Lincoln Memorial steps, surrounding plazas, hardscape elements, and adjacent areas leading toward the Reflecting Pool. The resulting datasets provided the design team with dependable existing conditions, allowing them to confidently develop installation plans without relying on outdated drawings or field measurements.

High-Accuracy LiDAR Documentation for a Historic Landmark

Projects involving nationally significant landmarks require exceptional accuracy while minimizing disruption to public spaces. The National Mall experiences heavy pedestrian traffic throughout the day, making efficient field operations essential.

Scan Skunks planned the scanning process to maximize coverage while avoiding interference with visitors. Multiple scan positions were established throughout the site to capture every visible surface of the memorial steps, retaining walls, walkways, plazas, and surrounding hardscapes. By overlapping scan locations, we created a unified point cloud capable of accurately representing the existing conditions of the project area.

Because the temporary installation would interface directly with existing site features, even small dimensional discrepancies could affect fabrication, logistics, and installation. LiDAR scanning provided the level of precision necessary to reduce those risks before construction began.

Capturing the Lincoln Memorial Steps and Hardscape

One of the primary objectives of this project was documenting the intricate geometry of the Lincoln Memorial's exterior steps and surrounding architectural features.

Unlike conventional surveying methods that capture individual points, terrestrial LiDAR records millions of measurements every second. This creates a dense digital representation of the environment that preserves elevations, slopes, edges, transitions, and dimensional relationships across the entire site.

Supporting Temporary Installation Design

Temporary installations often have compressed schedules and limited opportunities for field verification. Design teams need confidence that fabrication dimensions will match existing site conditions when materials arrive on location.

The LiDAR scan allowed designers to work from an accurate digital environment instead of making assumptions based on photographs or historic drawings.

By importing the point cloud into BIM software, architects and designers were able to coordinate installation components around existing site conditions while identifying potential conflicts before fabrication began.

This proactive workflow reduces costly redesigns, minimizes field modifications, and improves overall project efficiency.

Matterport Virtual Tour Provides Remote Site Access

In addition to terrestrial LiDAR scanning, Scan Skunks created a complete Matterport virtual tour of the project area.

The virtual tour became an important collaboration tool for designers, consultants, project managers, and stakeholders who could not regularly visit Washington, DC.

Instead of coordinating repeated site visits, the design team could remotely navigate the memorial, review architectural details, inspect hardscape conditions, and reference site features directly from their computers.

The virtual tour also helped improve communication among consultants by providing visual context alongside the precise LiDAR data.

From Point Cloud to Revit Model

After completing field capture, Scan Skunks processed the LiDAR scans into a unified point cloud before beginning model development.

Our modeling specialists translated the scan data into a highly accurate 3D Revit model representing the existing site conditions. Rather than approximating geometry, the model reflected the actual measurements captured during scanning.

The Revit model enabled the design team to:

  • Coordinate temporary structures with existing site geometry.

  • Perform clash detection before fabrication.

  • Reference accurate elevations throughout the project.

  • Develop installation details using reliable dimensions.

  • Improve communication among architects, engineers, and contractors.

This digital workflow significantly shortened the time required to move from field documentation to active design.

Working Efficiently in a High-Traffic Public Environment

The National Mall welcomes millions of visitors each year, making efficiency an important consideration during field operations.

Our scanning methodology allowed the project to be completed while minimizing disruption to pedestrians and ongoing public activity. Portable LiDAR equipment enabled our team to quickly move throughout the site while maintaining the precision required for BIM modeling.

Unlike traditional measurement methods that require extensive manual documentation, LiDAR scanning captures complete environments rapidly, allowing field crews to spend less time on site while collecting substantially more information.

This efficiency is particularly valuable in heavily visited public spaces where extended closures or restricted access are not practical.

Deliverables That Support Every Phase of Design

At the completion of the project, Scan Skunks delivered a comprehensive package of digital documentation tailored to the design team's workflow.

The project deliverables included a 3D LiDAR point cloud, 2D CAD drawings, a 3D Revit model, and a fully navigable Matterport virtual tour. Together, these deliverables provided accurate existing conditions for design, coordination, visualization, fabrication, and installation planning.

By combining reality capture technology with BIM modeling expertise, Scan Skunks transformed one of the nation's most iconic public spaces into an accurate digital asset that designers could confidently use throughout the project lifecycle.

Why Architects and Designers Choose Scan Skunks

Historic sites, civic spaces, and complex architectural environments require documentation that goes beyond traditional field measurements. Scan Skunks specializes in capturing existing conditions with engineering-grade accuracy, providing architects, landscape architects, exhibit designers, contractors, and project managers with reliable digital assets for planning and construction.

Whether documenting a national landmark, a commercial facility, a university campus, or a historic structure, our workflow combines terrestrial LiDAR scanning, reality capture, BIM modeling, CAD production, and virtual tours into a streamlined process that supports every stage of design. By delivering accurate point clouds, intelligent Revit models, detailed CAD drawings, and immersive Matterport experiences, Scan Skunks helps project teams reduce uncertainty, improve coordination, and make informed decisions before work begins in the field.
